Chandrayaan-3 Mission: Two-Way Communication Established and Lunar Landing Imminent

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved a significant milestone in its Chandrayaan-3 mission by establishing two-way communication between the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter and the Chandrayaan-3 mission’s lander module. This achievement comes as ISRO gears up for a historic lunar landing attempt on August 23, 2023. With this successful communication link, the anticipation for India’s lunar quest reaches new heights.

Two-Way Communication Milestone

In a recent update, ISRO announced the establishment of two-way communication between the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter and the Chandrayaan-3 mission’s lander module. This accomplishment was conveyed with the message, “Welcome, buddy! Ch-2 orbiter formally welcomed Ch-3 LM. Two-way communication between the two is established. MOX has now more routes to reach the LM.” This achievement further enhances the mission’s readiness for the upcoming landing event.

Countdown to Lunar Landing

Chandrayaan-3 is scheduled to make a soft landing on the moon’s surface on August 23, 2023, around 18:04 IST. With the landing event just around the corner, excitement is building within ISRO and across the nation. This ambitious mission aims to land on the moon’s south pole, a feat that would place India among the elite group of countries that have achieved successful lunar landings.

Aiming for Lunar Success

ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 mission is poised to mark a significant leap in India’s lunar exploration journey. If successful, India would become the fourth country in the world to achieve a soft landing on the moon, following the footsteps of the United States, Russia, and China. The mission holds immense scientific and technological importance, showcasing India’s advancements in space exploration.

Tribute to Vikram Sarabhai

The Chandrayaan-3 mission’s lander module is named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai (1919–1971), often referred to as the father of the Indian space programme. This gesture pays homage to his visionary contributions that laid the foundation for India’s space achievements. The mission serves as a testament to his legacy and the nation’s commitment to space exploration.

Journey to Lunar Orbit

The Chandrayaan-3 mission utilized a GSLV Mark 3 (LVM 3) heavy-lift launch vehicle for its journey to the moon. Launched on August 5, the spacecraft has undergone a series of meticulously planned orbital manoeuvres to lower its position closer to the moon’s surface. This precise trajectory highlights ISRO‘s technical prowess in navigating celestial bodies.

Components and Objectives

Chandrayaan-3 comprises various electronic and mechanical subsystems designed to ensure a safe and soft lunar landing. These include navigation sensors, propulsion systems, guidance and control mechanisms, among others. The mission’s key objectives encompass achieving a safe and gentle landing, rover exploration on the moon’s surface, and conducting in-situ scientific experiments.

Conclusion

As India stands on the cusp of another remarkable achievement in space exploration, the ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 mission reflects the nation’s unwavering dedication to pushing the boundaries of scientific and technological advancement. With two-way communication established and the lunar landing date drawing near, all eyes are on ISRO as it strives to etch another historic moment in India’s space odyssey.
