During his address at the India Today Conclave 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the success of Indian democracy and its institutions is being targeted by some individuals, which is leading to attacks on them. This statement comes after Congress MP Rahul Gandhi recently claimed in London that the country’s democracy is “under attack.”

PM Modi pointed out that the world is watching how the democratic participation of more and more people is increasing in India, even during the pandemic, with successful elections being held. He highlighted the strength of India’s institutions, including the strong economy, banking system, and the successful delivery of over 220 crore doses of the corona vaccine.

The Prime Minister suggested that the success of India’s democracy and its institutions may be hurting some people, leading them to attack it. Without naming anyone, he criticized those who denigrate the country, saying that they have taken the responsibility for applying a “kaala tika” or black mark, to many auspicious things happening in the country.

PM Modi added that the country is full of confidence and determination, and global scholars are optimistic about India. However, some people are talking about disappointment, frustration, and humiliation, which is causing a dent in the country’s morale.

The BJP members have been demanding an apology from Rahul Gandhi for his remarks, alleging that he maligned the country’s institutions. In a lecture at Cambridge University in London, Rahul Gandhi had stated that Indian democracy is under pressure and under attack, and that as an Opposition leader in India, they are navigating that space.

Overall, PM Modi emphasized the strength of India’s democracy and its institutions, and how the country is making progress despite the challenges. He also called for unity and support for the country’s progress.
